Die Altstadt mit ihren Kolonialbauten wurde 1982 in die Unesco-Liste des Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen. Seither laufen mit internationaler Hilfe zahlreiche Renovationsprojekte. Aber auch im 20. Jahrhundert entstanden hervorragende Bauten: vom Eklektizismus über den Jugendstil bis hin zur Moderne. Seit der Revolution brach die Produktion hochstehender Bauten ab, denn die bescheidenen staatlichen Mittel flossen anderen Sektoren zu. Gleichzeitig verhinderte die ausbleibende Immobilienspekulation jenen problematischen Bauboom, der in den sechziger und siebziger Jahren weltweit Spuren hinterlassen hat. Wenn die Architektur laut Octavio Paz der unbestechliche Zeuge der Geschichte ist, dann gilt dies ebenso für das Nichtgebaute. So erklärt sich Havannas heutiger Stadtraum gerade auch durch die Abwesenheit von Bauten aus einer Zeitspanne von über 35 Jahren.

The city's old colonial buildings were recorded in 1982 in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since then, with international help run a number of renovation projects. But as well in the 20th Century excellent buildings have been built: from the eclecticism of Liberty up to modern times. Since the revolution the construction of high sopisticated buildings has been interrupted because the limited financial sources went to other sectors. At the same time the lack of speculation prevented those questionable real estate boom which marked the worldwide urban appearance in the 1960´s and 1970´s. If the architecture, according to Octavio Paz, is the incorruptible witness of history, then this applies also to the not-constructed. This explains Havana today's urban environment especially by the absence of buildings from a period of over 35 years.
